Waverly Cottage, known as the Shone-Charley house, was constructed in 1898 by Joe Shone in the Queen Anne/Eastlake style. Shone was born in England in 1865 and arrived in Medford in 1895 with a wife and two children.Designed by Architect W.J. Bennett the house is a remarkable example of complex design and elaborate embellishment.
During the construction of his home Joe managed the Barnum Planning Mill and served as primary contractor for the Wilkinson-Swem building in downtown Medford.
Named Waverly Cottage by the Shones, the house was sold to William and Andromeda Charley in 1901. Born in 1832 in Hursttown Indiana, William Charley arrived in Jackson County with his wife and children in 1876. Upon retirement from raising cattle the Charleys purchased the property and the house remained in the Charley family until 1978.
Robert and Tiffany Pool purchased the home in 2004 and dedicated 4 years to the restoration of the cottage. On a limited budget they started from the foundation and worked their way up, including restoring the porch with the onion dome using old photos. The restoration also included re-creating the carriage house which was torn down sometime in the 30’s. The rod iron fence which surrounds the property is period Victorian and was hand built and installed by Robert. Spring time is especially beautiful in the gardens at Waverly, with the over 100 roses compliments of Harry & David’s Jackson and Perkins Roses. The last piece of the puzzle is still in the works and installation of all the embellishments for the porch is set for summer 2014.
